The Kokeshi doll is a traditional handcrafted Japanese doll that originally had a cylindrical body with a flat round face.  In ancient Japanese society, the dolls were thought to have spiritual significance and represented a wish for a healthy child.  Eventually, they became toys for children and art objects.  The Kokeshi doll is one of the most popular cultural gifts from Japan.
